Annual Institute

EMMI participants, in addition to exploring 18th-century performance practices in a chamber orchestra setting, have the opportunity to attend

  • Seminars and performances, including discussions of the history of string instruments, ornamentation and improvisation and the role of dance in instrumental music
  • Technique clinics (both general and instrument specific)
  • Small chamber ensemble sessions.
  • Baroque dance classes introducing some of the basic step patterns and their relationship to the music, which is key to interpreting instrumental baroque dance forms
For the chamber ensemble sessions, each player will be placed in a group with an assigned piece. We will begin on Wednesday evening with an informal group reading/strategy session. On Thursday, groups will rehearse individually and be coached. At the end of the afternoon, we will reconvene and play again for each other. (Players may audit these sessions if they do not wish to perform.) The conducted ensembles will also be worked into this format and schedule.

The Friday morning upper and lower string session will include discussion of how historical performance practices can be applied to the solo Bach repertoire.

The final in-house performance will include both orchestral and chamber works (which we will collectively choose), and is designed as an informal opportunity to practice performing new techniques for colleagues, friends, and each other.
